A blast furnace melts iron ore, coke, and limestone at ~1500°C. Iron collects below, while slag forms and floats on top.
Molten slag is separated from iron and rapidly cooled with water jets. This forms granulated slag — a glassy, sand-like material.
Granulated slag contains moisture and must be dried before grinding. It is dried using a rotary dryer or similar equipment.
Dried granulated slag is ground to a fine powder using ball or roller mills. This powder is known as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS).
GGBFS is stored in silos and transported in bulk. It is used as a supplementary cementitious material, replacing 30–70% of Portland cement in concrete.
